Average Price of Greek and Foreign Books for the Year 2005

Taking into consideration the fact that every library annually allocates its budget for
books acquisition, aiming at collection development, TQMU carried out a research related
to the Average Price of Books in Greece (greek and foreign) for the year 2005.
The aim of the specific research is to provide the managers of Greek Academic Libraries
with an estimating tool of the money needed for books acquisition, contributing in that
way to the best budget management.
The specific research is divided in two parts. In the first part are given in tabular
form statistical data with the average price of greek books for the year 2005 by subject
classification. In the second part are given in tabular form statistical data with the
average price of foreign books for the year 2005 by subject classification. Two charts
are also given related to the allocation of the cost of books sample, greek and foreign.

At the Meeting of Representatives
of the Greek Academic Libraries, which took place in Ioannina in 27th of April 2001,
a specific number of Performance Indicators have been set up for the evaluation of
the Greek Academic Libraries. Starting from the year 2004 the annual reports of MOPAB
will be based on these Performance Indicators.

This text aims at the codification of the questions included in the questionnaire
that TQMU distributes annually to the Greek Academic Libraries. Each question is being
presented here in detail and ways of selecting or calculating the answer to every
question are being suggested.
The specific text is a complementary study to the guide of
"Performance Indicators for the Greek Academic Libraries",
therefore the two texts must be studied simultaneously.

Each library, regardless its size and type, allocates its budget according to its current needs.
Budget allocation can be an extremely difficult and time-consuming job, given all the changes
that have been made in the economic, administrative and technological department of information
science. Bearing also in mind that the budget is the core of the acquisition process,
the compilation of a guide describing ways of allocating the existing resources was
considered an essential need.

The evaluation of academic library services and activities is the best way to determine
whether the initial objectives have been accomplished and what remains to be done.
This guide proposes ways of measuring the effectiveness of the services provided and has as
its ultimate goal the assurance of quality in these services.
